Fortuna senior pitcher Maggie Wells saved her best performance for last, the Lady Huskies did what no other Big Five team could do this year.
On senior night, Wednesday, the Lady Huskies defeated the previously unbeaten Del Norte Warriors (11-1), leaving behind a distinct blemish on the Warriors’ Big Five crown as they won 9-5.
Wells had yet another phenomenal performance in the pitcher’s circle, playing through the throbbing pain of a torn ACL as she struck out seven and gave up just five hits.
“I just threw with as much heat as I had left,” Wells said. “My curve and fastball was working all day, so I just stayed with them.”
Though Fortuna came away with the win, things did not look good for the team in the first innings of the game, especially when Del Norte batter Michelle Stacey blasted a grand-slam in the top of the third, giving her team a 5-3 lead.
Wells was quick to put the home run behind her, however, getting help from her teammates who turned a double-play shortly after to end the inning.
“I just forgot about it and cleared my head,” Wells said. “We still had plenty more innings to play.”
The fifth inning made all the difference for the Huskies when they put together a six-run rally, led by Brittany Gonzalez, who hit an RBI single to start it off.
Teammate Felicia Ambrosini then followed with an RBI single of her own – one of two key hits from Abrosini during the game.
As the rest of the inning unfolded, some untimely Del Norte errors eventually cost the team four more runs, and effectively put the game away.
“We were thrilled to have batted as well as we did,” said Fortuna head coach Greg Sarvinski. “Last time we faced (Alyssa) Berquist she no-hit us, so this is an especially big accomplishment for our team and a great way to cap off the season.”
Berquist pitched the entire game, striking out six and walking two batters.
“My girls made too many mistakes on defense,” said Del Norte head coach Jackie Heuberger. “And on offense, we left too many runners on base.”
Fortuna’s Tamara Miranda had a noteworthy performance at the plate, going 3-for-4, while teammate Kyrie Slade went 2-for-4 on the day.
The Huskies finished the regular season 5-7 in league, and 11-11-1.
