Law enforcement officials in Arcata are looking for a man suspected of alleged rape early Sunday morning at Humboldt State University.
The University Police Department is searching for a suspect described as a slender white male in his early 20s with brown “dreadlock” hair to his shoulders whose about 5’9” tall and around 150-160 pounds.
Arcata Police Department Chief Randy Mendosa said his officers and staff are in consultation with UPD on the case.
Officials did talk with one person of interest, but couldn’t determine for sure that it was the suspect in question.
UPD Chief Tom Dewey is asking for any witnesses to come forward.
“We’re trying to get a higher lever of confidence as to who the suspect may be,” he said.
This is the second sexual assault reported to UPD since the beginning of the year.
The other one involved Eric Glen Mork, a 24-year-old HSU sophomore charged with suspicion of false imprisonment, assault to commit mayhem/rape and unlawfully touching an intimate part of another. He pleaded not guilty to all counts.
That alleged sexual assault occurred March 27 in the Chinquapin residence hall, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Mork on May 21.
Dewey said they also received a call about another possible sexual assault on campus, but nobody came forward or contacted UPD. The case is still open.
“We tried to get more details on that,” he said. “We can’t confirm that it took place on campus.”
The alleged rape Sunday morning occurred near the Sunset residence halls on campus — an area Dewey said is lit up and has an emergency telephone.
The survivor saw the suspect at an off-campus party Saturday night and encountered him again at the gazebo between Sunset and Redwood residence halls.
The alleged rape occurred somewhere between Sunset residence hall and an elevator that connects to the Jolly Giant Commons building, Dewey said.
The survivor of the alleged rape contacted UPD Monday afternoon.
Officials are treating this as an acquaintance rape since the survivor socialized with the suspect in the past.
North Coast Rape Crisis Team Community Outreach Coordinator Paula Arrowsmith-Jones said in a previous interview with The Eureka Reporter that 80 to 85 percent of sexual assaults are committed by somebody known to the survivor.
The University Police Department is asking anyone with information about the case to phone 707-826-5555 or e-mail the UPD at hsupd@humboldt.edu.
