Marian Shanahan McDonald died peacefully on May 27, 2008 in the same room of the family home where she was on born February 26, 1913. She joins her husband George, her parents Mercedes (Zanone) and Frank Shanahan, her brothers Ken, Francis and Paul, and her sister-in-law Eleanor.
Marian was raised in Humboldt County, attending the Nazareth Academy as a boarding student, where she formed a lifelong friendship with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. On weekends and holidays, she returned to her family home and often traveled by stage to the family ranches in Petrolia, where she assisted her extended family members with the chores of ranching.
Marian married her husband George in 1950 and became a resident of Mountain View, Calif., where she and George were active in their community. They loved to entertain and maintained an open door policy to friends and family. Marian continued to travel often to Humboldt County, providing support to her family whenever needed. She returned permanently to the area in the spring of 2007.
Marian is survived by her brother Paul’s children, Linda DeLong, Phyllis Lane, Kathy (George) Hayes and Greg (Lynn) Shanahan; her cousins Rosemary Halley and Christine (James) Conley and their son, Peter; and 12 great and 22 great – great nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge the years of friendship and support provided to Marian by Linda Bettiga, Michael Halliday and Sister Cecile Bertheau, CSJ.
The Rosary will be led by Father Loren Allen on Monday, June 2, 2008 at 6 p.m. in St. Bernard Catholic Church. Father Allen will say the Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard Church with internment to follow.
Pallbearers will be her nephew Greg Shanahan, and her great nephews, Mike Wilson, Greg Lane, Jason Douglas, Paul Shanahan and Ken Shanahan.
Donations may be made in her honor to St. Bernard Gallon for Gallon fund, to St. Joseph Hospital’s Blueprint for Excellence or to the donor’s favorite charity.
Arrangements are under the care of Pierce Mortuary, Eureka, Calif.
