Approximately 23 more fires caused by lightning strikes have been reported by CAL FIRE, bringing the number to 60 Sunday morning, with several others increasing in size.

Due to the difficult terrain and inaccessible areas where most of the fires have occurred, CAL FIRE has increased the number of crews and air support deployed to combat the blazes. The largest fire in the state is in the Paradise Ridge area northeast of Shelter Cove; as of Sunday evening, 5 percent of the 500-acre fire had been contained. A 30-acre fire near High Rock, north of Weott in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, is reported to be uncontained. As of Sunday, CAL FIRE has 55 engines, 15 hand crews, two air tankers, seven helicopters, five water tenders, two bulldozers and 505 personnel assigned to the fires. Cooperation between CAL FIRE and businesses owning property affected by the fires, such as PALCO and Green Diamond Resource Co., has resulted in faster location and containment of fires. The Arcata Fire Protection District and volunteer fire departments from Briceland, Honeydew, Petrolia and Shelter Cove are participating in the firefighting efforts.
