A 60-year-old Ferndale man may be missing in the wilderness near state Route 36. Virgil Leroy Hall left his home June 23 to travel to Deerlick Springs, which is near the Platina area, and was to return to Humboldt County June 25, his wife Marleen Hall said.
A missing persons report was filed with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, Marleen Hall said, but no traces of him have been found.
“Nothing to date has been found, nor has anyone seen him,” she said.
Virgil Hall was last seen driving his dark blue 1999 GMC Sonoma three-door, extended-cab pickup truck a few miles east of U.S. Highway 101, on Route 36, his wife said. “But there has been no word of him since,” she said.
Virgil Hall takes medication for diabetes, and while he took his medication with him, he’d be out of it by now, Marleen Hall said.
He was last seen wearing a T-shirt and jeans, and usually has a baseball cap on. He has short, dark, graying hair. He also has a Marine tattoo on his left forearm and a scar on his right shoulder from replacement surgery, his wife said.
While the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office couldn’t be reached, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Brenda Godsey said a search for the man hasn’t been conducted since he was reported missing Friday.
“In a case like this, it’s difficult because of the geography and the distance,” she said. “And there’s a time frame that’s difficult and this large search area — it doesn’t make it a viable option for us to go and search.”
Absent any specific leads to follow, there are few actions law enforcement can take in a case like this, Godsey said.
“We entered him into a missing persons database, so if anyone in the law enforcement community comes into contact with him, he’ll be flagged as a missing person,” she said. “In a situation like this where there’s such a wide search grid, it makes it almost impossible for law enforcement to conduct a search.”
Marleen Hall has since posted fliers and has started a search of her own. She’s asking that anyone with information on her husband’s whereabouts contact her at 707-407-6359 or 707-786-9119 or phone a local law enforcement agency.
“We ask that people keep an eye out, especially traveling over (Route) 36 for his vehicle,” she said.
