Dog killed by exposure to fireworks

A dog was killed after being exposed to fireworks on Friday night around the 3000 block intersection of Trinity Street and Myrtle Avenue in Eureka.

The Humboldt Fire District received a call about the incident around 11 p.m. Humboldt Fire District Capt. Dan Salinger said a couple driving by the area noticed smoke and fire coming from a vehicle and turned around to check into it.

The captain reported that the couple said they saw children walking by the vehicle and the couple pulled a water hose from a neighbor’s house and extinguished the fire.

A unresponsive dog was pulled from the vehicle and resuscitation efforts were started, Salinger said. It appears the dog died after being exposed to too many toxins from fireworks found inside the vehicle, Salinger said.

The case has been turned over to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office for arson investigation.
