Residents protest cell phone tower they say city didn’t tell them about

If residents living near the Apostolic Church in Eureka have their way, a 60-foot-tall cell phone tower masked as a bell tower won’t pierce the skyline anytime soon.

Filled with trails, animals and plant life, Fern Canyon never ceases to attract visitors coming for their first time or their hundredth time. Located 50 miles north of Eureka, Fern Canyon is found in the Prairie Creek Redwood State Park.

'Boo at the Sequoia Park Zoo'

Oct. 25-26 Boo at the Sequoia Park Zoo will be held Saturday Oct. 25 and Sunday Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For the first time ever, the Sequoia Park Zoo will host a workshop for kids age 8-12 to assist with preparing the food enrichment for the annual Boo at the Zoo. This workshop will teach children about animal enrichment and animal diets. Participants will help carve pumpkins, make spider cookies and assist zookeepers with animal feeding at Boo at the Zoo. Oct. 24 The Annual Fall Carnival at Morris Elementary School in McKinleyville will be held Friday, Oct. 24 from 5:30–8:30 p.m. Admission is free. The event will include games and activities, refreshments, and raffles for children and adults.

Oct. 19 The “Celebrating our Health / Festejando Nuestra Salud” health fair for Spanish speakers will take place Sunday, Oct. 19 from 12-4 p.m. at Eureka Adult School, 674 Allard Ave., Eureka. 'Feed the Community'

Oct. 11 Food for People, the North Coast Growers Association, the Arcata Service Center and KHUM will sponsor the “Feed the Community” event Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Arcata Plaza Farmers’ Market. Participants will be asked to purchase extra produce to donate to Food for People and the Arcata Service Center. Both organizations will have two donation areas on the Plaza with tables and information about their different programs and the people they serve
